What are small groups?

We at Main Street Church recognize that deep, intentional relationships often happen and are fostered in small groups. While we do have Gospel Communities, our small groups on average are about 2-8 people and are mixed gendered or same gendered. In our small group ministry, we encourage small groups to gather for 1) an elder-approved Bible study or discipleship curriculum, 2) fellowship and accountability, 3) a combination of those, or 4) another goal to care for one another. Most small groups meet at least twice per month following the church calendar September-July.  Loving God, Loving Others, and Making Disciples of Jesus Christ within the context of a small group is our purpose and desire.

Small Group Content

There are many ways to connect as a small group. We do not require that all our small groups go through the same material, though we enjoy suggesting ideas and providing materials for our groups to utilize. All Main Street Church small groups have had their curriculum/plan vetted by our staff and elders, and is based on and oriented around Scripture. Some types of groups that you may find are:

  • Curriculum Based Groups: These are groups who use a pre-made curriculum together as the basis of their studying of God’s word together and to prompt helpful questions and discussions. These groups will usually be diving deep into specific areas of growth together (e.g. purity, growth in a particular area, accountability in a particular area, etc).

  • Book Studies: These groups are utilizing a book as the basis of their studying of God’s word together and as a challenge to grow more together.

  • Scripture: Many groups simply read through Scripture together, allowing God to convict their hearts and challenge them as they come to his direct words to us. Each group going directly through Scripture has worked with the staff/elders to have guiding commentaries or resources for when questions of interpretation come up.

  • Others: As needs arise or a specific leader has a desire to lead a specific type of small group, we are happy to assist and encourage those groups.

In addition to their chosen way to engage with God’s word and be encouraged and challenged together, each group utilizes some method for accountability and care for one another.

Small Groups are open to any age and stage, married or single, and we love helping connect people to a subsection of our church through our time together. Small Gruops are excited to have others partner with them for the year…sometimes even longer! No matter when you join, we ask you to make a commitment for the remainder of the term (through July) as much as possible. Please let us know how we can help you find a Small Group to find closer relationship with.
